SpamFighter.com warns people to beware of work from home job offers coming from email spam.
Spam Fighter writes that the University of Alabama at Birmingham has studies showing that show that the emails are promising people fast and easy money, and that they ask from money up front. (Source)
I pretty much always ignore emails like that. If you encounter emails like that just mark them as spam. And perhaps if it's really something awful, report the email.
On the bright side, there still are LEGITIMATE work at home jobs out there. This website has many! Check out the Work From Home section!
