Working at Home and Providing Equipment

Java World reports about how some employees who work from home for companies are expected to provide their own equipment for certain projects.
And one woman says she can't work at home sometimes, because her company won't provide Microsoft Office for her. So, she has to wait until she gets in the office to do any projects she could have otherwise finished at home. Wow, that's one cheap company! They could be so much more productive if they just bought the woman a copy of Microsoft Office off of eBay and wrote it as a tax write off.
I never really think about situations like the ones in the article. I'm usually a work at home Independent Contractor (not a work at home Employee), so I usually have to provide my own tools/equipment.
I think if these companies want their employees to work from home, then they need to provide the necessary utilities/tools/equipment for the employee.
